2017 Swim and Stroke Lessons

Register for swim lessons online using the AFC Registration form, checking the appropriate box and following the payment instructions. Use the same login and password as you used for paying your dues.

Welcome Arlington Forest families to Tiger Lessons. Our swim and stroke lessons offer classes for all levels, from beginner to advanced. Please place you child in the appropriate level to the best of your ability. There will be some shifting of levels the first day of class to assure your child will be in the group that fits him or her best. Your instructor will let you know when your child has completed the level and is ready to move to the next.

A) Swim Lessons - Description

The swim lesson program at AFC consists of 3 different levels which are dedicated to teaching children the fundamentals of swimming, culminating in the development of a rudimentary freestyle and the basic skills of backstroke. Please read the descriptions below. Note: classes are divided by age and skill level. This program consists of 3 different levels. It is expected that swimmers will continue in the same level for more than one session.

B) Stroke Lessons - Description

The stroke lesson program at AFC is for more advanced swimmers, ages 5 and up, who want to further develop the freestyle and backstroke technique in addition to learning the other two competitive strokes of breaststroke and butterfly.

This program consists of 2 different levels. Please read the descriptions below. It is expected that swimmers will continuein the same level for more than one session.

C) Advanced Stroke Clinic - Description

The advanced stroke clinic at AFC is primarily for those swimmers who want to legalize and further refine their breaststroke and butterfly. This class will be taught by senior instructors. Please read the descriptions below. It is expected that swimmers will continue in the same level for more than one session.


A) Swim Lesson Levels

Swim Lessons: Preschool (ages 3-5)

Level

Preschool Level I


Be separate from parent for 30 minutes


To become comfortable in water and submersion in water

  • Submerge head under water for 5 seconds
  • Front (face submerged) and back float without support for 5 seconds)

Preschool Level 2

  • Be separate from parent for 30 minutes
  • Comfortable in water
  • Submerge head for 5 seconds
  • Float front and back for 5 seconds unassisted
     OR
    Successfully completed Level I


Streamline body position and forward propulsion


Jump in pool, kick to surface and swim 10 meters on front using arm circles. Return kicking on back


Preschool Level 3
  • Be separate from parent for 30 minutes
  • Able to swim with arm circles and kick for 10 meters with face in the water
    OR
    Successfully completed Level 2


Side breathing and introduction of backstroke

  • Tread water for 1 minute
  • Jump in deep end and swim ½ (half) lap of freestyle with side breathing. Rest and finish the lap in same manner.

Swim Lessons: Youth (ages 6-up)

Swim 50m by swimming 25m free, rest 5 seconds and return swimming 25m back with proper technique.

Stroke Level 2


Swim 50m – 25m of free and 25 m of back.
 OR
Complete Stroke Level 1 suggested but not required


Breaststroke and Butterfly


Swim 50m by swimming 25 breaststroke, rest 5 seconds and return by swimming 12.5m of butterfly followed by free to complete the length

C) Advanced Stroke Clinic: Youth (ages 7-up)

Level

Minimum Class Requirement Focus

Breaststroke

  • Swim 50 free and 50 back with proper technique
  • Have a basic understanding of breaststroke
  • Helping swimmer achieve a legal breaststroke
  • Refining breaststroke technique

Butterfly

  • Swim 50 free and 50 back with proper technique
  • Have a basic understanding of butterfly
  • Helping swimmer achieve a legal butterfly
  • Refining butterfly technique

Swim and Stroke Schedules

AFC will again be offering a variety of learn-to- swim lessons for all ages this summer. The lessons will be weekly. Fees: Swim Lessons and stroke lessons: $45 for a 1 week session; Advanced Stroke School: $55 for a 1 week session. Classes with less than 3 children registered will be canceled. No refunds for missed classes! Registration closes Wednesday night prior to Monday class start.

Morning Lesson Schedule

Overview

  • Morning sessions include 4 30-minute classes over 1 week.
  • Classes meet Monday-Thursday, unless noted below.
  • Make-up days are Fridays.

Duration

  • School age lessons and stroke lessons (6yrs & up): 9:20am-9:50am.
  • Preschool lessons (Ages 3-5): 9:55am-10:25am.
  • Advanced Stroke Lessons (8yrs & up): 10:30am-11:00am, weeks 1-4.

Evening Swim Lesson Schedule

Overview

  • Evening weeks include 3 40-minute classes over 1 week.
  • Classes meet Tuesday - Thursday unless noted.
  • Make-up days are Fridays.

Duration:

  • Preschool lessons (Ages 3-5): 5pm-5:40pm.
  • School age lessons and stroke lessons (6yrs & up): 5:50pm-6:30pm.
    No Advanced Stroke Lesson offered in the evenings.

Cancellations

If there is a storm or heavy rain, a class will be cancelled. Decisions are usually not made until 15 minutes prior to the class start time as weather changes rapidly. Check Twitter @AFCSwimLessons for the latest information.
